Focus 8.1, the text discusses cases in which women athletes went through sex verification in order to determine whether they still qualified to compete against other women in their sport. Sex testing in sports has been controversial. Begin your discussion by giving your initial opinions on the topics. Should a woman who has hyperandrogenism or androgen insensitivity syndrome (like the two women described in the text) be disqualified from competing against other women? Why or why not? If they cannot compete against women, is it then fair to have them compete against men? Think critically about why women are the ones being tested and not men. How can sports become more inclusive (not just stuck in the gender binary) and remain fair?
