Drugs and forensic toxicology

Instructions

The assigned readings for this week focus on drugs and forensic toxicology. The New York Times Article entitled “How one DEA Agent Cracked a Global Fentanyl Drug Ring” provides an interesting view of drugs and forensics. Notice that sometimes chemists can discover a drug signature identifying the country of origin. Also from this story, the supplier “tested” a mix of heroin and fentanyl on a friend who then died. Not having access to forensic laboratory services, sadly drug dealers create their own testing protocols which can prove deadly to a human tester.

Several DIY (do it yourself) forensic tests are emerging that permit testing of drugs or for the presence of drugs. Acquaint yourself with three of these types of chemical tests listed below:

Testing if fentanyl is present in a drug. Links to an external site.

Testing someone for drug use. Links to an external site.

Testing to see if a drink has been spiked with a drug. Links to an external site.

Do you believe any of these DIY forensic tests hold the potential to reduce drug crimes? Would you be inclined to use or suggest using any of these tests? Why or why not? Could the results of these types of tests be used in criminal investigation or prosecution?
