County’s incarceration data and how it impacts certain communities more or less than other communities.

Instructions

There are a variety of viewpoints on our Criminal Justice System. One specific divisive issue is our County’s incarceration data and how it impacts certain communities more or less than other communities. As a police officer, you are entitled your opinion about societal topics, but I warn you to have an opinion in your personal life and not as much in your uniformed life. You will be confronted with incarceration statistics and you will be accused/congratulated for being part of the problem or solution, depending on the accuser’s viewpoint(s). One thing that you will find valuable is that you will, someday, learn how to look at statistics critically and not just buy into whatever the loudest voice is claiming. In that light, I would like you to watch the two videos below, which highlight two opposite viewpoints about incarceration and answer the questions below the video links. Keep in mind, it does not matter the speaker or websites these viewpoints come from, rather it only matters what the viewpoints are (that is how critical thinkers analyze viewpoints, instead of analyzing viewpoints through the prism of emotion).

Prison Viewpoint B https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzxTaRkY6z4

Can you identify statistics in both of these viewpoint videos which are misleading or wrong?

How is it misleading or wrong?

What is the truth about that specific statistic, from your perspective?

Where did you get your information from to support your claims?

What statistic, if any, did you think was misleading, only to find after research, you could not prove it was incorrect?
