The New South saying is a slogan which was used in America after the end of the Southern America Civil War. The Civil War had devastated the South America’s infrastructure and deteriorated its economy. The slogan means that the American South was now to shift from the “agrarian revolution error” to a society that incorporated industrial advancement (Hermann, 2018). Therefore, the main objective of the New South was to urge the South to shift from agricultural economy to a new economy which was characterized by industrialization.

The New South seems relatively unchanged compared to its pre-civil war version. Firstly, during or before the Civil War, the South engaged in people’s exploitation for instance, slavery and segregation. The New South advocated for industrial change as well as the end of people’s oppression. However, that seems unchanged since oppression is still practiced in the present day through ethnicity and racism. Further, during the pre-civil war period, the South American government and royals took advantage of the normal citizens through conflict leasing, sharecropping and over taxations among others which seems relatively unchanged since governments still intimidate its citizens through matters such as high taxations or extreme law enforcements.

The fact that the New South seems relatively unchanged impacts the southern social and economic norms in a post-war setting. To begin with, the New South remains unchanged because of the racism and ethnicity practice in the current world. Racism and ethnicity affects the social norms through hate and despise among people of different races, e.g. racism between the blacks and the whites, which could lead to a post-civil war. Further, issues such as unemployment, high taxations, high living costs, etc. impact the economic status of the United States. Moreover, oppression and racism (matters that haven’t changed despite the creation of the New South) impacts the economy since racist blacks and whites cannot work together towards the same economic goal.
