You are going to watch two short films that utilize biotechnology.  

The first video is called: “Got Silk”

The second video is called: “Popped”.  Popped is about the evolution of corn and how we have come to understand where corn came from.

Write a brief summary (one to two paragraphs) discussing what you learned.  (5 points)

Now research how biotechnology can be used in solving real-world problems like food shortage, increasing nutrients in foods, enhancing the quality or quantity of food.  You can look at any other topic like gene repair, cloning, treating disease, etc… Write one paragraph on your research and properly site your source. (5 points)

An area of concern among the public are GMO’s but: “Do you really know and understand what GMOs are?”  Make an informed decision on GMOs and support it with scientific research.  You must support your point with primary literatureand cite your source. (5 points).

In the video Got Silk-Biotech application, I learned how scientists discovered a technique of putting up an entirely new twist on a genetic study known as bio mimicking. Researchers have also discovered that they can now duplicate a spider’s webbing by breeding goats with spider DNA in the malignant cells. Furthermore, I have discovered that goat’s milk has a glycoprotein that can be twisted and expanded into perfect silk suitable for covering Spiderman.

Having watched the second video called popped, I have learned that, Corn is the outcome of the domestication of teosinte, a wild Mexico grass. I have also learned about biological, genetic changes that occurred during the transition of teosinte into maize, as well as the historical evidence that linked this transition to a certain moment and places in Mexican. Today, corn is processed and consumed by both people and livestock.

Biotechnology, especially genetically modified organisms (GMOs), can increase agricultural production by increasing harvests and providing diseases and pest-resistant plants in impoverished countries. Biotechnology may increase output in various ways, such as boosting blooming capability and increasing photosynthetic or nutritional component absorption. In the long run, genetic engineering may aid in developing the most constituents of certain crop varieties. Huge numbers of people rely on maize and rice as their primary sources of food. Biotechnology may be applied to improve ancient fermentation-based food manufacturing methods, such as those used to make gari, a fermenting, grainy, and carbohydrate dish made from cassava. Biotechnology may also aid in the elimination of dangerous substances, either via genetic engineering or food manufacturing. The capacity to study, alter, and clip and copy DNA fragments is critical in modern biotechnology. Today, genetic repair technology is an essential aspect of contemporary biotechnology, and it is utilized to provide bacteria, crops, and organisms with new capabilities, among many other things. This would be made by placing a gene from a bacteria, for example, into a crop or mammal (transgenes). DNA cloning refers to biotechnology cloning procedures that are used to make multiple duplicates of DNA molecules. To make numerous duplicates of DNA molecules, clone vectors are utilized. Cloning DNA molecules is then accomplished using agarose gel and DNA sonication techniques. Finally, Biotechnologies can be used to assess the genetic content of pathogens to identify whether a certain disease-causing agent causes an illness. (Pham, 2018)
