Fetal Alcohol syndrome is a condition in children or infants that is caused by alcohol exposure before they are born. This condition happens during their mothers’ pregnancy period. It causes mental challenges to the infants and stunted growth. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is irreversible since it has no cure. In the United States, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome cases range from 0.1-1.5 of infants for every studied population of 1000 infants. The syndrome affects children either during the birth or later in their life, or both. The signs and symptoms of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome include; below average body weight, poor memory, attention problems, poor school performance, and communication complications.

Fetal Alcohol syndrome not only affects infants in the United States but also infants from other states. If a pregnant lady takes alcohol during her pregnancy period, the infant’s risk of acquiring Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is uniform regardless of the geographical region. There isn’t safe level of alcohol during pregnancy and therefore pregnant women should avoid drinking alcohol at all costs. However, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome can be prevalent in some countries due to certain factors such as; pregnancy and birth rates, and the population of women

The European region has the highest prevalence cases for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. A WHO study showed that out of 1000 infants, more than 15 infants suffer from the syndrome (Colom et al, 2021). Fetal Alcohol Syndrome cases are common in the European region because most of the women population engage in risky drinking. The unsafe consumption is mainly linked with high urban residence and high salary levels. On the contrary, the Mediterranean region has the lowest rate of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome cases. From a population of 1000 infants, only approximately 0.1 of the infants have the syndrome. The low Fetal Syndrome rate in the Mediterranean region is mainly influenced by low levels of alcohol consumption.
