The revolutionary Northeast’s Industrialization had significant advantages but also problems. In terms of benefits, Industrialization led to economic growth in the Northeast. The invention of machinery and factories promoted an increase in production and efficiency, prompting an increasing the manufacturing industry and commerce. As a result, there was an increase in the Northeast’s economy. In addition, Industrialization also created job opportunities which attracted many immigrants and people migrating from their rural homes to work in factories in urban centers (USHistory, 2014). This, in return, improved the lifestyles of some people like Junius Spencer, who became rich. Among the major benefits also include advancements in technological innovations and transport as railroads, roads, and canals were invented (USHistory, 2014). With advanced transportation, the movement of goods and people was faster and easier, which further improved trade and the economy. Despite its benefits, Industrialization also produced major problems. For instance, “working-class laborers were subjected to long work hours with poor working conditions and low wages” (USHistory, 2014). Working environments in the factories were also unsafe, as they claimed the lives of some workers. Urbanization also caused overcrowding, lack of sufficient housing, and dirty living environments, which caused health issues. Evidently, “by the 1830s, the urban population had become a slum, home to widespread poverty, crime, and disease” (USHistory, 2014). It also contributed to human slavery as the rich business people supported slavery. Those who benefited were the economic elites, as they were the leading merchants. Contrarily, those who suffered were the working class laborer who lived in perilous existence. Unfortunately, the problems outweighed the benefits since individuals who benefited were a small percentage of economic elites. At the same time, the majority of laborers and the middle class faced a lot of problems. Thus, the problems outweighed the benefits as the negative consequences of Industrialization were prevalent and impacted a larger population compared to the selected few who benefited.
