Understanding of cognitive development

Cognition is the ability to learn, remember, and think abstractly.  The understanding of cognitive development includes perspectives from Piaget, Vygotsky (both of these theorists connect to your Child Study!) and Howard Gardner.    The teacher’s role is to understand how cognition develops in each stage of a young child’s life, and to put that knowledge to work in the classroom.  It is important to know and understand what is developmentally appropriate for each developmental stage.

Match the cognitive skill with the appropriate activity.

Numbers                         Using nesting blocks

Symbols                          Expressing amounts

Next, describe one activity that you can do with children in the classroom (excepted cooking) and explain HOW it connects to two or more of these cognitive skills. (Cite relevant information from Chapter 12 and resources/videos posted on Canvas in your response.)
