1) In the first chapter of this book, Gordon-Reed says, “Texas is a white man.” Why does
she depict the state in this way? Which elements of Texas’ history seem to support this
assertion?

2) What is the background that Texas has with slavery when it was a part of Mexico,
independent, the United States, and the Confederate States of America? How does this
tie in to the importance of the Juneteenth declaration being issued here? Why does
Gordon-Reed believe that Texans want to “Remember the Alamo” but only want to focus
on the present when looking at the history slavery within the state?

3) In what ways does Gordon-Reed show that Blacks were treated during the
Reconstruction era? How did this mistreatment continue into the early 20th century?
What justification was often given for the actions of whites?

4) How does Gordon-Reed demonstrate that origin stories are important? How does
the reality of life for Blacks in America contrast with the version most often told in
schools? Why does she believe that these helped to contribute to a narrow construction

5) In this work, Gordon-Reed discusses why she believed that there should be a natural
affinity between Black Americans and indigenous people and was surprised to find out
that this did not exist. Why did she believe that there should have been this connection,
and why was this relationship not as she had believed?

6) Gordon-Reed asserts that one change from her childhood is to bring people of color
into the narrative of Texas history as much as possible. What does she believe to be the
biggest challenge with this? How in particular does this challenge Black Texans?

7) Last but not least, discuss Juneteenth. What led to this proclamation being issued?
What were the reactions to it from whites and Blacks? Why does she believe that this
issuance was so important? How did this impact Reconstruction within the state?
